SWORDS OF THE INNER SEA SESSION REPORT 9

SWORDS OF THE INNER SEA SESSION REPORT 9

It was a slow night in GIKHUN TAM as RINPOCHE THE HERMIT
(C Huth), the barbarian ROBARD THE THIRD ( Dennis Higgins)  and URSA THE MUSTACHIOED (Zzarchov Kowolski) set out once again with the bandit KOJATA to plunder the ANCIENT TOMB in the shifting dunes, their retainers in tow. After an uneventful trip upriver, they entered the tomb, leaving the Amazon ZBERALE to guard Robard's fine horse and Ursa's team of water buffalo.

They first retrieved the last, empty amphora and two great baskets of grain and cakes from the chamber where ZHONN THE NOMAD had met his end, before crossing to the western edgs of the stone piers over the great dark pool. As Robard crossed over onto the Westmost Platform, a BRASS COBRA AUTOMATON sprang to life and struck out at him. As he nimbly rolled away, Ursa lassoed the serpent and cast the loose end of his rope downward, leaving the throng of GRASPING DEAD ARMS to pull the rope - and the cobra - into the depths, in a great burst of steam as its boiling form struck the water.

In a moment of respite, Rinpoche identified a mural on the western wall as the image of the demon XÂHAZ, a being said to be potent in agriculture, weather, war, and misfortunes. Next taking a set of dark stairs toward the tombs's depths, as Rinpoche examined the murals on the walls below, the party were taken unawares by a squadron of SKELETON SWORDSMEN, who they dispatched, though not before they took the head of the torchbearer GARUN. Wary, they sent Kojata ahead to scout, and learned that many more skeletal warrors guarded a door deeper within. Rinpoche attempted to lure then into a trap on the stairs, but fearful of the skeletons' numbers - and their whizzing arrows, he and his companions retreated out into the light.

As Zberale was readying Ursa's chariot, a band of ROUGH MEN came over the dunes, but before they could even issue a challenge, Ursa warned them to flee, for an army of the dead were quick on their heels. One of their number panicked, then another, and they took the better part of valor, shouting threats at Kojata as they fled.

The adventurers set off for home, but as darkness drew on them along the road, the GHOST OF A WARRIOR, his throat little but a grisly wound, grasped the unlucky Kojata and began to wrestle him for control of his body. Ursa's bull started in terror, pulling Ursa away from the scene, along with Zberale, who nimbly leapt onto the chariot. Robard pulled Rinpoche onto his horse and raced after, leaving Kojata to struggle. Meaning to go back for Kojata, Robard threw Rinpoche to the chariot, but before the aged hermit could even object, he was tumbling downward, and struck by the chariot wheel, barely avoiding death. Shaking off the dirt, he tried to aid Kojata with his magic, to little effect, but the bandit finally won out over the spirit, and along with Rinpoche, they rejoined their companions and returned, exhausted, to Gikhun Tam.
