SESSION REPORT - SWORDS OF THE INNER SEA, SESSION 17

Eager to learn some of the history of the ANCIENT TOMB in the dunes north of the WHITE RIVER, the HERMIT RINPOCHE set out with the pirate WUL, speaker of a language related to that in the tomb, in the company of DUBOVAI THE QUICK, ROBARD THE THIRD, URSA THE MUSTACHIOED, SULOMONDI THE VULTURE, JAYNOX THE MAGUS and RODOLFO THE PIRATE, along with the mercenaries HIYARI and YEGAN and the porter CHANO.

Approaching the cartouche of the prince MUNPAR NOT EB DJARAM within the tomb, Wul suddenly fell through an opening trap door and was quickly caught by Dubovai. Exploring further down the shaft beneath the trap door, they faced an UNDEAD TORTURER wielding an unwieldy EXECUTIONER'S SWORD which knocked Robard to the ground where he was swarmed by SHADOWY SCARABS, as BROKEN SKELETONS crawled forth from a hidden torture chamber. After a fierce melee, including a spray of scarabs from within the torturer's skull after Ursa shattered his hideous, eyeless clay mask, he and his skeletal victims were destroyed. Finding an intact, still bloody skeleton writing on the torturer's rack, Ursa forced the creature into a trunk to be deliverd to the necromancer UZZARIS CHOL. Leaving the torture chamber, they removed the prince's FUNERAL BARGE to the shore of the dry river bed in which the tomb rested.

Finding the temptation of the topaz eyes of the statue of XAHAZ too great to resist, Rodolfo made a solitary venture into the statue chamber, and setting foot on the stairs to the statue platform, was burned by a volley of beams from the statue's eyes. Undeterred, he tried to climb the statue causing the braziers around the statue to flood the room with CAUSTIC SMOKE, out of which came a pack of GHOSTLY GREYHOUNDS which mauled the hapless pirate to death. Too late, his companions avenged him, destroying the invisible hounds. Masking his face, Dubovai cautiously returned to the chamber and, avoiding the traps that had caught Rodolfo, liberated the gems.

After resting for the night (and driving away an immense cobra with a burning coal), meeting the nomad COLD MOUNTAIN, they traveled northward along the bank of the dry riverbed, examining a display of ANCIENT PETROGLYPHS atop a rocky overhang and crossing out into an upland valley, came face to face with the GREAT BULL OF SORROW, pulling mournfully at some desert weeds. Adopting the proper heroic stance, confident in his purifications, and carrying a rope woven with the beard-hairs of the holy man SENEKH, Dubovai approached the beast, offering him blessed grains, and the beast met him as a friend.

Mounting the beast, Dubovai and his companions traveled back the White River roadway, attracting an entourage of PILGRIMS along the way, and reachng GIKHUN TAM, yoked the beast to a plow and prepared to break the soil at the head of the White River's delta as Senekh had foreseen- in the meantime healing SARPEDON THE SMILING with a lick of its great tongue. Interrupted by a contingent of IMPERIAL SOLDIERS, they were told to await the arrival of the governor KIR KARIK SAYIN, who from his closed sedan chair, presided over the plowing, and, departing, left an invitation for the adventures to meet with him personally. And so, stabling the great beast as finely as possible, they awaited the sunset.

  1. Four is the same as a backpack, so that seems reasonable to me. The math says that a horse can carry 240 lbs on average, and a person can carry 1/4 their body weight in a backpack. Assuming a 200 lb rider, that's 10 lbs difference.
