SESSION REPORT - SWORDS OF THE INNER SEA, SESSION 28

Looking to turn a rich profit from extracting the JADE STATUES from the ancient SWAMP TEMPLE, MAZDAK THE GRIM, FOLG SON OF FOLG, the sorcerers WEND WITHER and THOGGOS, and THE HERMIT RINPOCHE, along with their henchman MINO set out from RIN LOTU, the canoes and rafts of the swamper EZO and his relatives laden with ropes, lumber, and other equipment.

After passing a barren crag raising from the water, which seemed to conceal a NARROW CAVE ENTRANCE, they arrived on the temple island. Unloading their supplies, they tossed many fish to appease the CROCODILES dozing in the temple fountain and entered the temple proper. However, as Folg and Thoggos tried to test the statue's attachment to its base, all four statues abruptly animated and the nearest swung heavily at Folg with its stony fists. First Thoggos, then the rest of the party fell back, and while Folg and Mazdak launched volleys of javelins and arrows at the statue nearest the open door, their companions reached the foot of the stairs.

As one of Folg's javelins finally shattered the statue, which then crumbled into dust, Wend Wither heard the low bellows of several more crocodiles, which emerged from the tall grass and began to converge upon them. They fled around the temple - Wend Wither with an uncanny burst of speed - as Folg and Mazdak scrambled over the courtyard walls. They hurried to the boats near the shore, and Rinpoche was nearly stranded, but the old hermit called down a ray of burning sunlight upon one of the crocodiles, which was turned on and devoured by two of his fellows. When he reached one of the rafts, he found its pilot staggered by one of Mazdak's stray arrows, and so began frantically poling towards his companions' canoes as the largest of the crocodiles swam toward him, undeterred by Mazdak's arrows and Thoggos's bolts of flame. He managed to clamber into the trailing canoe just as the crocodile snatched up the stunned raftsman and pulled him beneath the water.

Worrying about a loss of face among the Rin Lotuans, they stopped at the rocky crag on the way back, and Folg scaled its oddly barren face, and affixing a rope for his friends to follow. Inside the cave entrance, he found himself in a bell-shaped chamber cut from the living rock and decorated with simple carvins of fish and birds, with a vertical shaft in the ceiling and a sloping passage leading northward. Heading on, they found a carved rock well, with a YOUNG GIRL OF NOBLE ASPECT floating motionless beneath the water's surface. Tying a rope harness, they drew forth the girl, who suddenly coughed water out of her lungs in the middle of Wend Wither's medical treatment, and began shouting frantically and terrifiedly in some unknown language, before slipping free and cowering in the far corner.

Waiting for her to calm, they withdrew to the first chamber, and after Folg climbed up the shaft to find a CIRCULAR STONE DOOR, with no apparent means of opening it, the girl came down the passage and began shouting at them, clearly insisting that they leave the door alone. Meanwhile, Thoggos crept into the well chamber and with the aid of a rope and grapple, fished a SMALL GOLDEN BOWL from the well, secreting it away in his pouch. After some frustrated attempts to communicate with her by means of Wend Wither's chalked signs, and deciding that the girl would be in great danger if left alone in the cave, they removed her, despite protestations, and returned with her to Rin Lotu. Wend Wither then went about arranging for her lodgings, and made plans to learn her language.

  2. IIRC we got 7.5 gold each from Mazdak so he could keep the bowl unsold for future purposes
