SESSION REPORT - SWORDS OF THE INNER SEA, SESSION 36

Seeking to explore the mysteries of the BURIED CITADEL deep in the jungle beyond the PEARL RIVER, the warriors MAZDAK THE GRIM, PHERMOPOLIS, and PUNGA, the orphan JAINA DAUGHTER OF FOLG, the Sorcerer NILT-SIAR and THE HERMIT RINPOCHE set out with their retainers PIM and KORUL. Crossing over the savanna, where Mazdak noticed the entrance to a NARROW CAVE, and then they made their way into the jungle, where they encountered several members of the BLACK BAND bathing in a hot spring. Seeing no profit in violence, they pressed onward. As the night fell, they crossed from grove to grove, passing first one that Rinpoche took to be the precinct of some NATURE SPIRIT, and then another, a stand of rotten trees that gave Phermopolis an uncomfortable reminder of his last trip into the jungle. Finally camping by a tranquil pool, their rest was interrupted by a gang of ZOMBIES, whom Rinpoche diverted in the name of their master ZUHAB.

Arriving at the citadel the following day, they descended to the tower entrance and, beyond a brazen door found an EMACIATED DEAD FIGURE, a golden spike piercing his eye, his dead hand holding a golden hammer. Behind him, the wall was carved in the image of a face weeping blood. When Mazdak crept into the room, the dead figure leapt to the attack, baring fangs and sprouting claws, drawing blood that then flowed unnaturally toward the pierced tearduct of the undead thing. Few weapons could do the thing harm, but between Jaina's burning oil and Mazdak's ancient blade, it was defeated. As Rinpoche sketched the carving in the chamber on the back of a sacred sutra, Mazdak and Jaina investigated the hallway beyond, and opposite this chamber found a matching one in which sat a FEMALE FIGURE IN DEAD MEDITATION, pierced with dozens of golden needles. Wary of another battle with so few efficacious weapons on their side, they closed the door, and continued east past two great double doors. Next was a great chamber with a great PILE OF SKULLS and four statues resembling pitcher plants. Even more wary of what might haunt this chamber, they decided it best to return to the daylight world, but not before they had to defeat the ambush of three more SHRUNKEN CORPSES.

Crossing through the jungle with little incident, they camped on the edge of the savanna, where their camp was joined by the merchant KATTNA and his guards, who, they learned, were headed to UTTUN, planning to set up trade there. Then, on the morning, they passed the narrow cave they had seen before, which Rinpoche elected to flood with MYSTICAL SMOKE, driving out a pack of snarling HYENAS. As Mazdak rode out from the scene with great haste, Rinpoche levitated above the slavering beasts, and after Nilt-Siar set the largest of them afire with burning oil, they scattered into the distance.

Returning to GUNN LATTH, the guards at the gate told Mazdak that the lord KARUMAKKA had assaulted the Royal Physician AUNAR NUN with a dagger, nearly killing him. He made hase to the palace to find Aunar Nun convalescing, and learned that Karumakka was imprisoned in a cell beneath the palace. When Nilt-Siar, Rinpoche, and Phermopolis arrived, Nilt-Siar used his sorcery to further assuage Aunar Nun's wounds, and he and Mazdak accompanied Aunar Nun to the prisoner's cell. As Nilt-Siar secretly sifted through Karumakka's thoughts, Mazdak interrogated hin, learning that the Uttunese Prince BARUNNIN was likely complicit in the attack, and that Karumakka expected his daughter YALUN to rally his retainers in retaliation. Mazdak, confident that Karumakka still held loyalty toward Gunn Latth despite his hatred of Aunar Nun, proposed that Karumakka might preserve his honor with a fierce strike against the forces of the WESTERN EMPIRE. Karumakka insisted that he would agree to such a plan only if PRINCE GANDUNA were to personally apologize to him.

Mazdak and his companions were then called to an audience with PRINCE SARUN, who, while commending Mazdak for the cleverness of his plan, was steadfast that Karumakka must be formally executed for his crime against the sanctity of the throne. He also warned Mazdak to be wary of Aunar Nun's intrigues - and of attempting to persuade his brother against his interests - and bestowed upon him a ring. And so they retired to consider what to do next.
