SESSION REPORT - SWORDS OF THE INNER SEA, SESSION 20
On a rainy day in GUNN LATTH, the warriors MAZDAK THE GRIM, ROBARD THE THIRD, and FOLG SON OF FOLG, along with THE HERMIT RINPOCHE, DOCTOR MALACHITE, the spirit-talker JUKKAR THE STARRY-EYED, and the sorcerers KLAU-KALAASH and WEND WITHER set out to plunder the RUINED SEASIDE VILLA northwest of the town, with their hirelings CHASAN, GUNO, and NHON in tow. Paying a toll to a band of RED VULTURES commanding a ridge, and avoiding a territorial battle between two LONG-NECKED GREAT CATS they arrived at their destination. Leaving Nhon to guard the animals outside the villa, they entered the domed courtyard and ascended into its adjoining tower.
A cursory search showed that most of the villa had been ransacked since their last visit, but finding a scene of slaughter and a bloodied stone altar on the third floor, Wend Wither surmised that a sacrifice - and possible treasure - might be interred beneath the block. Robard, Mazdak, and Guno worked to overturn the stone, and only Robard's uncanny instincts kept him from the chilling claw of an UNDEAD MAIDEN SACRIFICE beneath the block. Screaming in terror at the ghastly, nigh-skeletal figure, Guno ran in a panic from the combat, as a flurry of blows and spells destroyed the creature. As his companions collected the sacrifice's ceremonial accoutrements, Mazdak turned to chase down Guno, and seeing him attempting to escape with Robard's swift horse MACHA, slew the cowardy mercenary in a single blow. He chided Nhon as a lazy sentry, and returned to his friends. Exploring further, they were ambushed by grotesque CROW-HEADED MARAUDERS. The warriors turned their blades on the ambushers, and Wend Wither tossed a bola carrying UNDEAD HANDS, and quickly the battle was won. Making their way to the top of the tower, they learned that the top of the tower was carved with an zodiac pattern, and held sighting pillars for a kind of ANCIENT OBSERVATORY. Making note of this, they decided to camp for the night in the servant's quarters below. Their rest was interrupted when SHADOWY SCARABS becan to rise from the ground to attack the sleeping Robard. Mazdak drove them away with a torch, and Wend Wither theorized that they were connected to the magical EXECUTIONER's SWORD that Robard had taken from the UNDEAD TORTURER in the ANCIENT TOMB northeast of GIKHUN TAM.
When the sun rose, and Mazdak had no luck in finding a clear trail from whoever had ransacked the villa, they decided to head north looking for evidence of who or what had made off with the daughter of the merchant TUNH DUNA CHHAN. As the sun was setting after some hours of searching, they decided to make camp, and first had to repel the ambush of another band of RED VULTURE. But that was not the night's only interruption as out of the shadows of the darkest part of the night came four massive BLACK DOGLIKE CREATURES with glowing red eyes and cloven hooves. Speaking in guttural voices, they summoned a ring of infernal flame to trap the explorers, and unable to command them to turn on one another, tried to slaughter them by spitting lightning and biting with fierce fangs. Slaughtering both Nhon and Chasan - and her hunting hound - and nearly mauling Rinpoche, whose magics had frightened away one of their number, the battle was close-fought and desperate, but the companions narrowly prevailed.
On the morning, their search was a luckier one, and they found the remnant's of the lady's guard, brutally bludgeoned and then partially consumed. With Mazdak finding the trail of a huge manlike or apelike figure, perhaps over eight feet tall, they judged that they best rest and recuperate before trying to face such an opponent, and headed back to Gunn Latth. Stopping only for another conversation with the MYSTERIOUS HOLY MAN stranded in a tree north of the city, they made haste to town and to the barracks and wine-houses to nurse their wounds.
