SESSION REPORT - SWORDS OF THE INNER SEA, SESSION 23

Strapped for cash and anxious of the political atmosphere in GUNN LATTH, the Sorcerer WEND WITHER, THE HERMIT RINPOCHE, SALA THE ALBINO and FOLG SON OF FOLG set out to plunder the crumbling ruins of the TOWER OF DUST in the dunes north of the city. Traveling past an abandoned pilgrim campsite, and then becoming lost in the meandering paths through the dunes, they made camp as night fell. On Wend Wither's watch, an ominous cloud of dust appeared at the edge of their firelight, and, rousing his companions, they made a desperate stand against a band of CRUMBLING SKELETONS ranging far from the tower. Rinpoche summoned a great cloud of smoke to displace the skeletons' choking dust, and after a bloody fray, defeated the dead things.

Resting uneasily, on the morning they followed the path of the skeletons to the tower complex, and scaled the outer wall on the eastmost edge. Noticing the flash of brilliant red and blue feathers among the branches of the uncannily lush cypress trees growing from the sand. As the others retreated to the top of the wall to observe, Folg jabbed at the feathers with the butt of his polearm, dislodging one of a covey of hungry PIRANA-JAWED BIRDS which tore at the nimble thief with great swiftness and fury. He tossed his OCTOPUS IN A JAR onto the tiles in an attempt to lure the birds away, but they were scarcely tempted by it, nor the strong and bitter smell of the fluid in which it was preserved. Sala rushed to his aid, thinking to catch some of the birds in the sack, but on Folg's advice, he rushed to scoop up the octopus, attempting to smear its body on his wounds, mistakenly thinking the perserving fluid might hold some healing property. Meanwhile Rinpoche managed to drive away the birds with a searing ray of focused sunlight as Folg climbed to safety. Binding his bleeding wounds, they considered their options and, still in neeed of money, descended again into the courtyard. Rinpoche made a futile attempt to rescue the dying octopus, but having little means to do so, cradled it briefly, looking into its sad eyes, before deciding on a mercy-killing, tossing the creature into the great font of ANTI-WATER, watching it twitch and then quickly shrivel into a dark, dry tangle and crumble.

Entering the south buidling of the complex, they found a spartan bedchamber and, under the bed, an ENORMOUS COBRA. Rinpoche cast a MYSTICAL RAY at the great serpent, compelling it to returned to its coiled and waiting position, allowing his companions to slay the beast. Pressing on, they found a RITUAL FIRE-PIT in whose ashes were a few fragments of incinerated texts, a reception chamber offering a bowl of SUCCULENT-LOOKING APPLES the adventurers gave a wide berth, a closet stocked with scribal supplies, and, perhaps most excitingly, a great SNAKESKIN-BOUND BOOK under a glass cover. Wend wither carefully removed the cover, setting off a piercing echo throughout the towers, and hastily scooped the book into a sack as the fled the way the came. Hastening to scale the wall, they were pursued by a CRYSTAL WARRIOR and a TWO-HEADED HOUND which they were able to dispatch with spells and javelins. Returing quickly to scoop up its shattered crystal remains, they quit the tower and, crossing the savannah south, avoiding the MYSTERIOUS LAKE they knew to hold a huge, unknown inhabitant, they returned to Gunn Latth.

In the barracks of the palace guard, Wend Wither turned his attentions to the snakeskin book, and upon touching its dark shining covers, was suddenly siezed by some venom infusing the skin. Luckily, he was quickly taken up by the wise Rinpoche, who rushed him to the chambers of the Royal Physician AUNAR NUN, who casually neutralized the poison with some potent spell. Accepting their thanks, he asked only that they look upon him favorably in the future. Afterward, the two magicians consulted the historian VOKK RINUAH, learning what they could about the lost tomb of the warlord HUR XWEH-TA, all this under the shadow of Aunar Nun's plot to deceive the historian with the trappings of a false grave.
